Cultural impactof foxhunting

Hunting provides over 1000 years of history through literature, art, music and architecture.

The cultural impact is well illustrated by the number of Inns that take their names from hunting – “The Fox and Hounds”, “The Huntsman”. Even pubs in urban centres often display hunting prints and other hunting memorabilia.

In the Lake District it is rare to find a public house that does not portray hunting. The local hunting songs are a major part of social occasions in the Fells.

The culture of British hunting extends far beyond the UK. Hunting in America, Australia, New Zealand and on the Continent is based on the rules and codes of conduct evolved in England and Wales. Others look to us to advise on standards of best practice, on hound breeding and on making hunting arrangements.

It is the British “experts” who take the lead judging at shows and speaking at seminars overseas. Hunters abroad simply do not, and will not, understand why a British Government banned hunting.
